I never knew how useful a blog could be to an educator
until I reviewed the information given in this module. Now I realize that a
blog could benefit a student in various ways. It can improve a child’s literacy
skills, integrate curriculum and even engage the parents more effectively. It
is a fun experience for the children and they enjoy doing work on the computer
so using a blog could only be beneficial. Twice a year, Linda Yollis runs what she calls
‘Family Blogging Month’. “It is a great way to formally invite parents to join
in the classroom learning via the blog. The family comments are always valued,
and during FBM, I highlight several family exchanges on the blog in the hopes
of encouraging more parents and family members to comment”(Linda Yollis, 2012). Parental involvement
is essential to a students learning and the blog definitely helps them more
easily participate in their child’s education. The blog could be used in so
many ways to teach lessons as well. You can “create a blog where students
collect data on science experiments. Use blog to display information gathered
from Google spreadsheets. Students can create/embed graphs and charts explaining
relationships of data”(Web2.0, 2008). This is a practical example of how a blog can be used
in the classroom. Blogs are a wonderful way of sharing information and I am now
more aware of how teachers can use it effectively in their classroom.
